Persephone is the Greek goddess of Spring and Queen of the Underworld. She is the focus of an enchanting tale of love, or abduction, depending on the retelling of the story. One day Persephone was in a field picking flowers when the earth cracked open and Hades came through to take her with him to the Underworld. Demeter, her mother and goddess of harvest and grain, was devastated. Because of Demeter’s broken heart, the crops had withered and died leaving the earth barren and thus came an endless winter.
